After you place a call to the device, it uses precision satellite-based GPS tracking to pinpoint the vehicle's location within 10 feet. It then sends the information, along with time, date, and battery life, to your cell phone in a text message. If you have a Web-enabled phone, the URL included in the text message lets you follow it directly to a map, but if not, you can also plug the coordinates into another free mapping service to find the location.
